Lose 40 Pounds in 80 Days> CALORIES IN ALCOHOLThe best way to drink if on a diet Is simply this - let Skinny buy it! I'm not for - or agin' - the W.C.T.U. I'm no Carry Nation - nor Billy Sunday's "horrible example" that used to sit on his platform. You can take your drinks or leave them, as far as I'm concerned; but if you do drink because of social necessity, or plain desire, here is some information I picked up. Food may be alcohol - and alcohol is food! Often you can drink your calories faster than you can eat them. All alcoholic drinks have calories! They are useless calories. They do little for you. They are for fun only. Unless you are an elderly person, you can get along without alcoholic calories and never miss them like you would calories from "protective foods." Many concoctions vary in their caloric content. This is important to know, especially if you plan to go on a Lost Weekend. HOW TO COUNT ALCOHOLIC CALORIES It is necessary to be able to tell the calories in drinks at a glance. Especially after a few of them, when you aren't in a counting mood any longer. I studied a lot on this, looking for a simplified method of "know-how," so that calories could be counted quickly and easily, right in front of Joe, the bartender, or at the home of a giggling friend. I finally arrived at this method: That for every "proof" you add a calorie. Scotch is 86 proof, so that means that each ounce you get 86 calories. Bonded bourbons are 100 proof - that means 100 calories per ounce. Find the proof - and you find the calories per ounce. Be a Man of Distinction. Know your Calories! IT'S THE MIX THAT COUNTS MOST The above way to count alcoholic calories may not be accurate to a calorie, may vary 5 one way or the other, but it is near enough. Warning: this count is for straight drinks only, or those in soda or "ditch water." When you add ginger ale, soda pop - anything in the sweet line - you'd better add up about another 65 calories, depending on the size of the glass. It's the "sweet" that add the calories. Even at a rough drinking party, sugar stays its same sweet self. Of course, if you cheat on that ounce of firewater, that also adds up. So if you dump just a little more into your glass when the hostess or bartender isn't looking, don't forget to add this up on your Slide Rule later on - if you can remember. How to remember? I know one fellow who pulls a match off his package of matches each time he takes an ounce drink, puts it into his side pocket, and when he wakes up next day he knows what his caloric intake was the night before! Tall drinks, like Tom Collins, are apt to be around 350 calories. Martinis and Manhattans are small drinks, but don't let 'em fool you. They usually contain an ounce - so with vermouths they can add up to about 150 calories each! And don't forget the olives. Three olives are another 25 calories. Maybe you'd better take a small pickled onion instead! Beer is 200 calories a bottle. Ale 300 calories! And bock beer - put down that glass. Bock is 370 calories! A bottle of beer and a bottle of buttermilk are about the same in calories, with 200 each. Would you step up to a bar and order several bottles of buttermilk? Or go into a store and say, "We're having a little poker game tonight-send up a case of buttermilk! 75 CALORIES IN WINE Dry wines in an average wine glass have about 75 calories. Sweet ones have just double, 150 calories. Cordials have 75 calories a pony. This includes brandy. Usually you have the dry ones before a meal or with it, wines such as sauterne, Burgundy, champagne, and the sweet wines, such as muscatel and port, with the dessert. It isn't when you drink them that counts, though, so much as how much you drink. Bacchus was a clever cuss. He was also a fatty, though. Next: Alcohol and Weight Loss |
