Lose Weight Program > Effects of Fast Diets

So don't rage at your appetite; it's one of man's normal blessings. Prepare to control it. Appetite is partly a matter of habit, and of state of mind, substitution, and other complex factors.

On the swift reducing diet we are about to describe, appetite may seem quite insistent the first day or two. But in the experience of most, the urgency soon diminishes. To a large extent, this is owing to the fact that protein foods emphasized in the diet satisfy the appetite rather quickly. What the overweight person conceives to be his "hunger" rarely leads him to gorge on plain broiled hamburger. More likely it induces him to indulgences in candy, desserts, and pastries. Such richness is naturally forbidden in a reducing diet, but the good foods that are allowed are satisfying to the appetite.

Moreover, there is amply satisfying bulk, sheer physical volume - in the Ten-Day Miracle Diet. In fact, a member of the Committee of Medical Nutrition of the National Research Council has calculated that this specific diet furnishes as much bulk as the average American diet. The average American diet of 2,500 calories contains about three pounds of bulk; the Ten-Day Miracle Diet, exclusive of liquids such as coffee or tea, owerages somewhat more than three pounds of bulk daily.

Still another reason why swift reducing is advocated by more and more clinicians is the fact that weight loss ordinarily shows up with pleasing promptness and, since the patient's sales prove that he is getting results, he is heartened to stick to his diet instead of falling off the wagon. All failures in reducing, assuming the diet to be truly a submaintenance one, are failures to adhere to the menu. Mental influences on appetite are illuminated by the reports of many patients, as soon as they see the pounds falling off, that they no longer feel hungry on their restricted diet!

Among the conclusions supported by the case histories of patients on rapid reducing diets are the following: Every bit of excess weight can be removed without danger; even the so-called "glandular" types of obesity yield to low-calorie diets (there goes that old gland alibi); contrary to routine practice of many physicians, there is no need to restrict water intake; salt need not be eliminated from the diet unless there is water retention.

Records of 186 overweight patients on these very low-calorie rapid reducing diets showed that pep and energy were usually increased within one week's time; headaches were frequently relieved and blood pressure reduced; in some patients menstrual disturbances and skin blemishes disappeared. A few patients experienced slight weakness and dizziness for the first two or three days, but these symptoms quickly vanished.

How long can such a diet be followed safely? Six months, eight months, a year - as long as excess fat is present.

This ,means that as soon as you have reached your ideal weight, the diet should be discontinued. It means also that you should have your doctor's consent before adopting it. The more drastic the diet, the more important is a physical examination. There are some physical conditions in which a physician might recommend caution in weight reduction for special reasons. A physical checkup is much less costly than a hospital sojourn occasioned by too enthusiastic dieting. Nine persons out of ten providing they are actually overweight, can adopt the rapid reducing program with perfect safety, but there is always the, chance that you are the tenth person. Probably the proportion is closer to one person in a hundred. Most of the dangers in reducing for the overweight are not to be blamed on the principle of losing weight, but the adoption of faddist, lopsided, grossly unbalanced diets that really can starve one by eliminating certain essentials.

Mortality rates for adults who are overweight (including those who think they are healthy as well as those with frank illness) are consistently higher than for persons of normal weight. And the greater the overweight, the higher the death rate, these grim tables say.

Here, then, is the swiftest safe slimming program that is scientifically sound - a diet that wages lightning warfare against fat in true blitzkreig fashion. It is a low-calorie diet with adequate protein and sufficient carbohydrate to burn up fat, but it contains an absolute minimum of foods furnishing fat calories, since your object is to consume these from your ample corporeal reserve.
