Vegetables give the body the minerals needed in dieting, and fruits leave behind an "ash" needed to keep us going.

Often a touch of something sweet - I said a "touch"-helps you end the meal properly.

It slows up digestion - makes you feel full longer.

Fat is good for ulcers. It remains longest in the stomach to keep the ulcer company, so the ulcer doesn't scream.

It seems ulcers scream only when lonesome for food, which is why the ulcer boys must eat 5 times a day.

Several light meals a day thin you faster than one heavy meal, since several light ones keep something in the stomach at all times, and you don't get hunger pains or urges. But remember - a mid-afternoon pick-up snack of a couple of candy bars with an extra-scoop milk shake for a chaser doesn't qualify as a "light meal.

The more I learned, the faster I went down. But I found out one thing-that the more overweight I was the faster I went down at first, when the excess was going off.

But at 190 it is plenty hard to get rid of those other four pounds. Those are the ones you fight for (if you're in the predicament I was in, with 186 as your goal). Because by then you're naked of fat. Drained of excess H2O. You really have to hunt around to find just four more pounds of fat to take off.

But like I always said - I'll make it, Ma. I'll make it.

No, Cecil, smoke from cigars, pipes or cigarettes has no calories.

In fact, I hear tell smoke often stimulates your metabolism - thus burning up a calorie or two.

HOW ABOUT MINERAL OILS?

I'd read about mineral oil salads, and decided to try mineral oil in my dressing.

But then my doe told me that mineral oil coats the lining of the system and prevents Vitamin A from being absorbed into the body.

So I stopped mineral oil salad dressings.

I tried vinegar dressings with spices, and they seemed to fill the bill.

I could vary the spices and so vary the dressings.

One sure thing - I looked at Thousand Island dressing now as though it was a mortal enemy.


A BIG EATIN' ERROR

I discovered a big eatin' error.

Awhile back I pointed out the difference in the way Fatty and Skinny go about eating meat with fat on it. The way Skinny trims his fat while Fatty leaves it on.

Skinny sez, "I eat like a horse, yet look at me!"

Fatty sez, "I eat like a bird, yet look at me!"

I did look at them - while they were eating - and made some other discoveries. They don't eat alike in a lot of ways.

They both order the same blue plate dinner, but watch how each one eats his.

Skinny breaks his bread in half. Eats a little of it. Makes a lot of crumbs. Dabs very little butter on it. Leaves a portion of each vegetable and some of his meat, maybe some of his gravy, on his platter.

Fatty eats three slices of bread, calls for more butter. Even nibbles the crumbs off the table cloth. Eats everything on the plate. Even takes the last piece of bread to mop up the gravy, French style.

So actually, while they both order alike, they do not consume calories alike!

Skinny gets, say, just one ounce less of calories a day by nibbling and skimming - and that little is the difference, in many cases, between Skinny who stays skinny and Fatty who gets fatter.

One ounce a day adds up to nearly 23 pounds a year. Remember?
