It is best to have them consist principally of protective foods, but you could have 15 100-proof bourbon highballs of 100 calories each (hic!); 15 orange juices (burp!); six doughnuts, a loaf of bread, or a bag of peanuts containing about 150 peanuts. Just so I didn't go over 4,500 calories on any three-day period, I still lost about a quarter of a pound per day, or the equivalent of 1,000 calories. So when I was at a client's house and his wife gave me a second helping, I didn't insult her by flashing my calorie chart. I did one of my most complimentary gobble jobs. When I saw an all-starch meal closing in on me at some luncheon or banquet, I ate. All 2,000 calories! But then the next day I cut down from my 1,500 calories to maybe 1,000. Same on the third day, and by that third night I had consumed no more than my 4,500 allowance for the three days. MORE "TRICKS OF THE TRADE" You can't go around giving your hostess' food the cold shoulder, or she may give you the same. You may lose her kind regard (or worse yet, her husband's business). But what you can do is kid her. I soon found that by messing up my plate I could leave behind some 300 calories smeared around. I could mess up that fine Thousand Island dressing to a point where nobody could tell what I'd eaten. I got so I could leave at least 999 of the Islands untouched without anyone being the wiser. I could nibble at the cake, putter with the butter, and let the ice cream melt off 100 calories while I stalled. Believe me, ice cream can melt them off a whole lot easier than you can, brother! I got very good at tossing off a lot of "table talk" until finally the maid whisked off my plate, still half full of food, after which I'd settle back, open my belt, and sigh: "Wotta meal!"
