There is no reason why a person on a reducing diet must have exotic or freakish foods. Many faddist diets stress the supposed virtues of unusual foods or combinations. They may be wholesome, even excellent, but are rarely worth the fuss and feathers involved.



Except for medical reasons, there are no special virtues in liquid diets, cleansing diets, fasting, juices, clabbers, etc., for the normal reducer. Overemphasis on a specific food or two at the expense of others may lead to malnutrition. The simplest assurance of good nutrition is to partake of a wide variety of wholesome foods of the sort that appear regularly upon the well-planned family table.

For that reason the diet that follows makes use of everyday foodstuffs. Meat servings, the keystone of the diet, are allowed in considerable variety. However, if you would like to simplify these even further for your own convenience, get a supply of plain ground round steak and serve it as broiled hamburger or patty wherever the diet calls for meat. It needn't be "choice" round steak, either. In fact, the cheaper utility cuts will serve your reducing purpose better than the costlier ones, since the former contain less fat and the protein value is a little higher.

As to milk, the kind allowed on the diet is skim milk - that is, milk as it comes in the bottle, with the top cream poured off. Homogenized milk cannot be used in this way because the fat is dispersed through it. Calcium and water-soluble vitamins are not significantly contained in the cream fraction of milk. Your skim milk, therefore, gives you a larger amount of calcium and certain B vitamins than would a similar amount of whole milk, and the calorie or fattening value is just about cut in half.

Vitamin Cocktail

This tasty and vitamin-packed little drink is a valuable accessory to any reducing diet-splendid even if you aren't reducing, for that matter. It is rich in Vitamins A, C, the B complex, and D, and guards against deficiency of these essentials in restricted diet. The calorie value is negligible considering its vitamin richness. Mix fresh daily and serve chilled.

Mix a tablespoon of dried brewer's yeast with five drops of haliver oil with viosterol (or other A and D concentrate) in 1h glass of tomato juice. Substitute other fruit juices if you prefer; some persons find milk a more pleasing vehicle than juices. Or you may prefer to munch brewer's-yeast tablets, take one haliver-oil capsule per day, and include citrus juices for all-around vitamin protection.

The easiest of all ways to guard against vitamin shortage is to take one of the multivitamin capsules now on the market that provide the full daily quota of essential vitamins. Substitute a capsule for the cocktail if you don't enjoy mixing. You are no more likely to be shorted of vitamins on the Ten-Day Miracle Diet than is the average person on the ad lib diet of his choice. Indeed, the vitamin values of the following diet have been carefully calculated and supplementation is more a matter of peace of mind than absolute necessity. But peace of mind is above price, and if you are really on the verge of a deficiency or have been eating unwisely for some time, the capsules should help.
