Lose 40 Pounds in 80 Days

Life isn't all romance, as the farmer said to the bull when he hooked him up to a plow one day.

The same for us skinny boys.

I want to try to be fair here. I want to give both sides of the picture, so nobody can say I'm biased.

The seats are now harder on my sacroiliac. I haven't those three inches of fat now between me and the boards.

I get cold quicker now that I haven't a 40-pound blanket of fat protecting me.

Since I'm not able to eat as much as my fat friends any more, I'm afraid maybe I'll lose out on some of the newer foods that fat boys always seem to locate first. (I oughta know!)

I don't need 12 hours of sleep any more, so now I have to find more things to keep me occupied during those extra four hours I'm awake.

I'm not considered jolly any more. I feel more like being jolly, but nobody will believe it. Before, when I was a fat boy, I was automatically supposed to be jolly, and didn't feel like it.

Another thing: I've lost the thrill of being able to compare some new "burp pills" with my friends.

I can't even compare burps any more. I'm now "burp-less."

If I went to dinner in China now, I would be a social failure.

What to do about the wrinkles?

I found that exercise pulled up my wrinkles. The general health of the skin pulls them up and takes in the little tufts and lines,

Bending-over exercises pull in the tummy muscles and tighten them up. Working the head in circles tightens up the wrinkles under the chin, where that double chin once reposed.

Once you stop rigid dieting, the body will begin to build back up and take up the loose folds where fat used to be. You can go back from 1,500 to 2,500 calories, or where the Fat Boy's Slide Rule says you must be.

If I would hold my present weight for three months, I was told, then the chances of bouncing back to 230 would be pretty remote - not only physically, as I explained before, but mentally.

Once you learn the fun of again being a trim boy, it will be darned hard to make you willing to puff up again.

I learned from the "Y" directors that fat won't gather over a working muscle, so try working them, I told myself.
I toss a handful of loose matches on the floor, or playing cards - anything to make me spend three minutes bending over and picking up things - because fat does run from working muscles like a mother-in-law runs from a kitchen full of dirty dishes.

I used to slump down when I sat around - hardly ever walked along erect or bent over to pick up things. Just didn't have the energy to want to. Thus fat gathered around my midriff. Sure enough, fat gathers around a lazy muscle like relatives around a rich uncle.

Work scares relatives - and fat!
