The conviction that passive reducing methods really work arises from the fact that almost always they are employed in conjunction with restricted diets. The diets do the slimming; the visible ministrations persuade you that the program is worth the fancy price.
Scientists also excuse you from special leg-kicking, torso-torturing exercises designed to remove fat from local regions of the body - especially from those favorite central areas of topography covered by the genteel terms "hips" and "abdomen." Such exercises have values of their own, but-this is the word of impersonal scientists with no axes to grind-they are of very little value in removing fat from local areas. Like any exercise, they help general weight reduction by stepping up energy expenditure. What they can do - and this is a wholly satisfying reason for taking them - is to change flabby, sagging muscles into the firm kind you associate with trimness.
Starvation as a reducing agent is out too. Believe it or not, a person on a complete starvation program shows no greater weight loss over a given period than a person on a low-calorie diet. When the body starves, it throws its machinery into low gear in order to keep it running as long as possible, conserving weight to the bitter end.
The ancient Romans, cannily figuring that an emptied stomach, would leave room for repeating the banquet course, built into some of their palaces an extraordinary chamber whose purpose was suggested by its name-vomitarium. What might be described as a modern reverse twist to this beguiling concept is the use of cathartic salts to drive water and undigested food from the body and thus to prevent it from staying on the person as fat. That the program sometimes serves its purpose
is slight justification for its health-wrecking disruption of body mechanics.
Most dangerous of all common reducing drugs is thyroid extract. It will reduce you, all right - to an ambulant skeleton. It stimulates your body to roar away under forced draught, burning up fat, to be sure, but exhibiting an unpleasant tendency to make your eyes bulge out, your heart race dangerously, and your general physical economy collapse from metabolic inflation. Only under a doctor's supervision, in suitable cases, is thyroid substance a legitimate reducing agent.
If money, the folding variety, is no object to you, then some of the pink plush salonized reducing programs may give you value received. You have company (you know how misery loves that); you are committed to a supervised program; the psychological values of personal attention and exhortation are not to be minimized. The fact remains, however, that reducing begins and ends right at your dining-room table. You have to eat anyhow and there is no reason why a safe, effective, and scientific slimming program should cost you a penny. Let our slogan be "No sweat, no drugs, no charge!"
You Can Take It Off
Well, how about it? Are you ready to go to work?
You have thought about reducing for a long time. You have
watched the glamour girls cast their slinky shadows on the screen and have perhaps confided to a friend, "I must go on
a diet!"
But what have you done about it?
Maybe a little pep talk is all you need to get you started.
That is the most important of all steps in reducing: the first one. Those promises made at the beginning of this chapter are
,personal ones. They are made to you.
Imagine yourself posing for an "after taking" testimonial photograph. There you are in a slink form-fitting gown, bubbling over with almost offensive vitality, spreading glamour in the corner where you are. Imagine other women staring at you in that finest of feminine tributes: that look which intimates that your trim appearance is almost too much. Imagine them going home muttering, "I've got to go on a diet!"
What charm, what self-confidence, what power!
Let's get going!
