Diets that stress high consumption of oils or fats take advantage of this built-in nausea reflex, deliberately or otherwise. Too much fat is nauseating and we stop eating before we reach a point of distress. So calorie intake is reduced, often sufficiently to bring about weight loss.
In this respect, large amounts of oils or fats are somewhat like reducing-pill drugs that doctors sometimes prescribe. They depress the appetite and help to lessen the calorie count. There is nothing mysterious, remarkable or newsworthy about this process. Food is the original and oldest appetite depressant, as anyone knows who has got up from a Thanksgiving dinner saying, "I ate too much."
The kind of fat makes no difference to this calorie-restricting mechanism. All pure fats and oils have the same calorie value, which is more than twice as great as the calorie values of proteins or carbohydrates.
Hope springs eternal that some safe substance that melts off body fat like a magic blowtorch, without regard for calories, will some day be found. No such substance is known to science. Anything that makes fat disappear must m some way cause negative caloric balance - less intake than output of energy.
For instance: Large doses of thyroid hormone may seem to melt fat away without respect to calories. However, calories remain at the heart of the matter. Excessive doses of this potent hormone cause a form of poisoning that makes the heart race madly and fans body fires into a holocaust. This burns up huge amounts of calories and weight loss results from negative calorie balance.
The arithmetic is the same as if you subtracted calories by means of a low-calorie diet. Needless to say, thyroid is far too dangerous a substance for routine use by reducers. Doctors prescribe it when the patient's hormone production is
inadequate.
There is no way to "repeal" calories. Not as long as you
shy warm to the touch.
As we have said, you don't have to count calories in order to reduce. They will be reckoned with whether you count them or not. But it helps to know something about the caloric values of common wholesome foods.
No law compels a book to state only the scientific truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Not even this onel A little knowledge about nutrients and calories may help you
to judge for yourself the validity of hundreds of reducing programs that clamor for the overweight person's attention.
Practically any reducing program-good or bad-will bring about weight loss, at least for a limited time, if the reducer adheres to it rigidly and faithfully. But you are going to keep on eating for the rest of your life. It's an entrenched habit. It is not very desirable, and some authorities think it harmful, to lnse 100 or 200 pounds a year and end up where you started, after spurts of on-again, off -again dieting.
In the long run, for a long life and a lightly-tripping one, weight control should be a matter of educated, automatic goodeating habits relying upon a wide variety of everyday nutritious foods, and not at all upon costly, unusual, fussy, exotic products, or monotonously limited menus.
No matter how thinly you slice it, food, if it is food at all, has calories and your metabolism is going to count them. What's the matter with that? If it weren't true, you wouldn't have a live interest in your weight. Or anything else.
