Lose 40 Pounds in 80 Days

> ELMER'S "BLUE PLATE" PLAN

I created a "blue plate" plan for myself which helped a lot in the early days of my diet.

It's a plan to get fatties such as myself started off on the diet. For like getting that first olive out of the bottle, it's the start that is the hardest.

When a fatty who has been used to wallowing in 4,500 calories a day suddenly drops down to 1,500, it's pretty tough on the poor fellow.

So I told my family we must have blue plate dishes from then on.

Under this plan, we would all go out to the kitchen and fill up our plates, and if the plate was normal-sized you got just enough to hold you, not enough to fatten you.

There wasn't any food around on the table, family style, in tempting dishes to make Fatty weaken. And I knew I'd get my hand jabbed with a fork if I tried to swipe any tidbits from anyone else's plate, so that was out.

If I finished my plate and started for the kitchen, nonchalant-like, it was the family's duty (and how they loved to do their duty!) to yell out;

"Hey, Fatty-where ya going?"

This will usually stop a fatty dead. It did me, especially when the wife yelped at me.

AN OLD WIVES' TRICK

I heard of another trick, too, to work on poor Fatty to get him under way.

Be sure all fattening foods on the kitchen stove are overcooked, tasteless, even burned.

This will spoil his taste for them.

On the other hand, be sure that the non-fattening foods are well displayed and plenty mouth-watering, to tempt him to eat and like them.

This will trick the Old Fat Boy into eating what is thinning for him-eating it and liking it!

A slick trick, isn't it?

Took a wife to think it up!

DID YOU KNOW? I DIDN'T

I didn't know-though maybe you did-that metabolism is a six-bit word doctors use when they start telling you how much energy you are expending daily.

A calorie is a measurement of this energy you expend.

You put coal into a fire, then adjust the damper to burn up the coal fast or stow. Calories are the coal we use, and metabolism is the damper that controls the rate at which we burn up those calories.

Some calories, like some coal, seem to burn up faster than others. These are those carbohydrate calories I mentioned before. They burn up fast. Give you a quick "lift."

They hit and run. Pep you up-then leave you hungry. And pack a lot of weight.

The proteins are slower-gaited. They are like large hunks of tobacco in your pipe. They burn slower, but evenly, and keep you going longer.

Golly, is Old Fat Boy getting scientific!
